Shrove Tuesday Pancakes

The Tuesday before Ash Wednesday is known as Shrove Tuesday.

Shrove, means to confess. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, a forty day period of time which Christians prepare for Easter. During this time of preparing we confess our sins, fast and give sacrificially. Many people give up something during this time like sweets or social media or take something extra on like waking up earlier for prayer and journaling or volunteering to serve a local charity. The idea is to decrease ourselves so that Christ can increase in our lives.

Serving pancakes for dinner is always a special way to mark the season of lent the family is about to enter. My kids like to live it up big and eat their pancakes with chocolate chips and whip cream, you might prefer fresh fruit and cream or the traditional butter and syrup. So whip up a batch of pancakes and dinner is served and mark this liturgical moment together as a family.

Fast and easy pancake recipe below from Better Homes & Garden cookbook makes roughly 5 7” pancakes, I like to double it for my family of four.

1 cup flour
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons cooking oil
