Birthday Cake for Jesus
We have spent four weeks during Advent preparing for Christmas. Now it’s time to make a birthday cake for Jesus. This is a fun cake to make with young kids who like to bake.
Talk about the ingredients while mixing and also while decorating to understand the symbolism of the cake. Many years ago, when my kids were just toddlers, my friend gave me this recipe she had found by Dave and Shirley Bauman (2003). Along with the recipe, she gifted me the star shaped cake pan. As you make the cake take a minute to look up the bible verses below and discuss each one with your child. This is a fun way to hear and see scripture come to life as you bake and decorate this cake celebrating the gift of life we have in Jesus Christ.
You can make a chocolate cake from a box mix or your own personal favorite recipe.
The chocolate cake will represent the sin of the world (Romans 3:23).
You’ll want a star shaped cake pan as it was the star the Magi followed to meet the Christ child and worship him.
The white frosting to cover the cake represents us being washed clean by the forgiveness we have in confessing our sins to Christ (Isaiah 1:28).
The red dots inside the yellow border of the cake represent the blood of Christ that saved us when he died on the cross for us (Matthew 26:27-28).
The top outline of yellow frosting represents the star that shines the way to Christ just like the
magi did (Matthew 2:1-2).
The fresh evergreen cut from a bush in your yard or purchased from your grocery store represents the everlasting gift of life we have in Christ (John 3:16).
The twelve candles on the cake represent the light of the world being with us all twelve months of the year (John 8:12).
The angel on the center of the cake proclaims and rejoices the birth of the king, our Savior, Jesus (Luke 2:9-10).
Now it’s time to light the candles and sing Happy Birthday to Jesus!
